Jamie Dotterer, Graduate Clinical Intern

My name is Jamie Lyn Dotterer (She/They); I am an intern at Bodhi, finishing my final year at Cedar Crest College to complete my Master’s in Art Therapy. I’ve had four art therapy internships, including Bodhi, working with disabled adults, senior memory care patients, and neurodivergent children. “Art as Therapy”, as coined by Edith Kramer, focuses on using art as the means to facilitate therapy. Kramer’s view on art therapy resonates with me on a personal and professional level with my journey onto the path of becoming an art therapist. As I’ve been working to build my professional art therapy identity, I’ve leaned more into the Person Centered Approach, where I believe therapy should be focused on the individual and what they need to strive and understand themselves. I enjoy working with children, with my background in education and after school programs, my previous internship with neurodivergent children at Camp Pegasus, and my experience with implementing Social Emotional Learning.

As an art therapist in the works, I hope to bring excitement to the idea of art therapy, allowing individuals to interact with their emotions in a safe and engaging way. Within the therapy sphere, I hope to maintain open communication with other clinicians and discussions on ideals of treatment and how we can improve or better understand our clients. I aim to bring humility and compromise into the conversation and hope to learn more about what it means to be a professional.
